OUR LINEAGE
Mitsuyo Maeda (November 18, 1878 – November 28, 1941), a Brazilian naturalized as Otávio Maeda, he was a Japanese judōka and prizefighter in no holds barred competitions. He was also known as Count Combat (or Conde Koma in Brazilian Portuguese), a nickname he picked up in Spain during 1908. He pioneered judo in Brazil, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Maeda was fundamental to the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through his teaching of the Gracie family. Maeda won more than 2,000 professional fights in his career. His accomplishments led to him being called "The toughest man who ever lived" and is referred to as the father of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Carlos Gracie (September 14, 1902-October 7, 1994) was the first Gracie to learn Judo from Otávio Mitsuyo Maeda. Based on this judo training, Carlos and his brothers founded the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Carlos Gracie died in 1994 at the age of 92. He was a member of the legendary Gracie family and was Hélio Gracie's oldest brother. Carlos had passed the teachings on to his brothers Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., Jorge, and Hélio. In 1925, the brothers opened their first academy in Brazil, marking the beginning of the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Hélio Gracie (October 1, 1913 – January 29, 2009) was a Brazilian martial artist who, together with his brother Carlos Gracie, founded the martial art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, known internationally as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Until his death, Gracie was the only living 10th degree master of that system, and is widely considered as one of the first sports heroes in Brazilian history; he was named Black Belt magazine's Man of the Year in 1997. He was the father of the world-renowned fighters Rickson Gracie, Royler Gracie, Royce Gracie, Relson Gracie, and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) founder Rorion Gracie. According to one of his most notable opponents, Masahiko Kimura, Hélio also held the rank of 6th dan in judo.
Rickson Gracie (born November 20, 1958) is a Brazilian 8th degree black and red belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a retired mixed martial artist. He is a member of the Gracie family: the son of Hélio Gracie, brother to Rorion and Relson Gracie, and half-brother to Royce and Royler Gracie. Rickson Gracie is considered to be the most talented Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner of all time with an amazing record of 400 wins and zero defeats.
Carlos "Carlinhos" Gracie, Jr. (born January 17, 1956) is a 7th degree Black/Red Belt[1][2][3] (The belt designated to a "Master" or "Mestre") in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) under his uncle Helio Gracie . He started the Gracie Barra Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and is head of the Gracie Barra, one of the largest and most successful worldwide Jiu-Jitsu associations. He's a member of the legendary Gracie family.Carlos is the creator of the International Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-jitsu which run the largest Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in the world: the Mundials, Pan American and European Championships.
Luiz Palhares is a 6th Degree Black belt under Rickson Gracie. Luiz began training in 1976 with the legendary Rolls Gracie. He received his purple belt under Rolls and then trained with Carlos Gracie for a period. He has been under Rickson Gracie since 1982 and received his brown and black belt from Rickson. Luiz Palhares received his black belt in 1984. He has won the Rio de Janeiro championships several times. After moving from Rio de Janeiro (Gracie Academy), Luiz has been teaching law enforcement and women self-defense (anti-rape) classes and BJJ seminars in America, Canada and Europe (Paris,London and Belfast). 2000, 2003, 2004 Pan American Champion super heavy weight senior division and open, 2002, 2003 3rd place in Masters and Seniors International, 1998 Brazilian National Champion in heavy weight senior division and open. He is currently a resident of Florida and teaches classes for civilians, the military and Special Forces (Seals, Green Berets, Rangers).
Renzo Gracie born March 11, 1967) is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) expert and a Gracie Barra Black Belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. and a member of the Gracie family from Brazil. He is the son of Robson Gracie, grandson of Carlos Gracie, nephew of Carlos Gracie, Jr. and grandnephew of Helio Gracie. His brothers Ralph and the late Ryan Gracie are also famous fighters. He holds notable wins in the sport of mixed martial arts over former UFC champions Pat Miletich, Oleg Taktarov, Carlos Newton and Maurice Smith.

What others are saying about Joe Diamond BJJ Academy...
My training at Joe Diamond’s School has helped my Jiu-jitsu game develop and expand to a degree I never thought possible. I’ve spent countless hours training and fighting and I’m confident my time spent at Joe’s School has helped me become a better grappler and fighter.
I’ve dealt with Joe Diamond & Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy for several years now and they have my respect for being one of the most professional, quality training centers in the NJ and Philadelphia areas. As a MMA matchmaker I know I can count on Joe to have an advanced knowledge of each of his fighter’s capabilities and to always produce properly trained competitive fighters for me to work with. Much respect to Joe and Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy. –Ed Hsu, Combat in the Cage www.combatinthecage.com
Joe Diamond of Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy has established himself as one of the finest teachers and instructors in the region. While creating one of the best Training Centers in the area. Joe and his formidable Fight Team have had a great influence on the success of New Breed Fighters. We are honored and blessed by his participation and contribution to our organization.. We are very fortunate to be able to call Joe Diamond of Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy a loyal and valuable friend.
I am a Pleasantville, NJ Police Seargeant who started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1996. I was looking for a martial arts form that would increase my chance of survival on the job. I quickly found out that Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was the right choice. I also received instructor certificates for unarmed combat and impact weapons training to instruct Police Officers. I agree that the unarmed defense and impact weapons training is necessary for police work, but I have benefited more from Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training, boxing, and Muay Thai taught at Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy.
I have been in many street fights as a Police Officer and in every confrontation I have used my new skills to defeat every adversary who has come up against me in the numerous street fights I have been involved in.I say without my Martial Arts training from Joe Diamond and Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy, I would have made many trips to the hospital. Gladly, I came out on top and I have faced many good street fighters. My advantage in all these fights is of course Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy. Thank you Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy. - Mark Johns
I love Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. It keeps me in great shape, it’s sustainable and it boosts my confidence every time I train. As a federal law enforcement officer, I know I can deal with any threat I’m faced with. - Scott Tolladay
I’ve been training here with Joe Diamond for a bunch of years and it’s a great place with a great team. I’ve trained all over the country including a couple of gyms in L.A. But there’s nothing like the community here. The team spirit is great here. It’s a great place to train for a fight. - Gary Gross
I have been a member of the Seal Teams for about five years and have attended a variety of hand to hand classes. The techniques were taught in a controlled environment and I often questioned the effectiveness in combat conditions wearing full gear. A teammate of mine took me to Jiu-Jitsu. After just a few classes I was totally convinced that this is the most efficient and effective form of fighting I have been exposed to. It can be tailored to any environment and or situation. It also allows maximum damage in minimum effort. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is by far the best there is. - John Conza, U.S. Navy Seal Team #4
Since beginning my training with Joe Diamond’s school, my cardio, technique, and ground game has improved drastically. I lost 30 pounds of fat and am in the best shape of my life. Thanks to Joe and all the guys who train at the Philly School. -John Malcolm
I have been training for about 2 years and am a Blue Belt under Kurt Pelligrino. I train at Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy with Joe Diamond during Fall and Spring when I am at school. When teaching the Basic techniques (which is the most important part), Joe Diamond constantly helps reinforce small details that can either make or break a particular move. The advanced techniques can sometimes be very complex and hard to grasp at first, but Joe teaches subtle tricks that have helped me remember and excel at these maneuvers. I spent the first year of my training in “no-gi”. I was relatively new to wearing the gi when I came to Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy, and I have learned more techniques with it in just a few months than I could have imagined. The Instructors are very professional.. Overall, I highly recommend training here for literally anyone. I look forward to every session. - Matt Kessel
Training with Joe Diamond has lifted my confidence, got me in shape, and prepared me to fight. The training at Joe Diamond’s School is excellent. I tested my skills in my first fight at Combat in the Cage and knocked my opponent out in Round 1. I really enjoy going to the school to train and look forward to my next fight! I recommend this school to everyone. Thanks Joe! - Jesse Bator Testimonial
I have trained in many styles of Martial Arts. Training in Gracie Jiu-jitsu is the best and completes my game. The Saturday MMA training is as real as it gets. - Josh Cruz
I have been attending classes at the East Coast Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for three weeks and in this short time I have become 10x more effective on the ground than the 7 years that I wrestled in school. Gracie Jui-Jitsu has totally opened my eyes to an efficient and effective way of fighting. The instructors place confidence and precision in the techniques unlike any wrestling camp or clinic I have ever attended. In short this place kicks ass!!! - Phil Conza
I’m fourteen years old. I’m here at Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy training with real fighters. I think anybody who wants to be a real fighter, a good fighter, professional fighter should come here to Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy because this is the real training, the hard training real life, the real thing Come! The reason I go to Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy is because I love training and I’ve seen how they train. I seen the way they kick, there style, I love it! The first day I came I trained hard. That’s what I like, I like training hard. That’s what my dream is to be the best fighter. This is where I train at Joe Diamond Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy.. - Steve Deleon
